Growing Hosta From Seed
All of the seed we offer here at HostaAmour are Open Pollinated, or in other words, we have let nature determine the parents. All seeds are listed under the pod parent and will carry only some of the characteristics of that parent. In knowing that "new" varieties may be achieved through cross pollination with a "streaked" cultivar, we have strategically planted them through out our gardens. Thus making growing hosta from seed that much more exciting! We allow the seed pods to mature on the plant before harvesting them, and we only sell seeds collected that season. So every year our list of available seeds may change. We have had great success in growing hosta from seed and have several seedlings showing promise and in a year or so, who knows maybe HostaAmour's first named cultivar.
Seed Starting: This is the method that works best for us but you may have to alter slightly based on your zone and available materials. Start by placing seeds in the freezer for at least 3 weeks. Then using a good seed starting mix, place a ziploc bag full in the microwave (do not seal bag shut) and heat on high for 3-5 minutes. Be careful when removing from microwave as soil will be very hot. Spread soil evenly in a sterilized tray and let cool for several minutes. Spread seed evenly across soil and pat in to make contact. Do not cover seeds with soil. Sterilize some water and allow to cool and place in a misting bottle. Mist the seeds well and cover the container with a clear dome. Hosta seeds do not need light to germinate, but do need it warm. Find a good spot with those conditions and be sure to check frequently and that the soil stays moist. In about 10 days you will start to see grass like shoots, I then place them under grow lights at 12 hour intervals. When 2 leaves are fully formed you can start with a diluted fertilizer and when the dogwood trees bloom they can be transplanted outdoors.
Good Luck and Enjoy!
